Charles and Sarah's son William
Sorry, I have no photos of Charles and Sarah, my great-great-grandparents. But here's a photo of their eldest surviving son William Stagg, my great-grandfather, with his wife Christina (nee Haase). They were photographed in Blenheim, South Island, New Zealand, in the late nineteenth century.
Charles and Sarah
Along with Johann Ludwig and Hanne Haase, Charles and Sarah Stagg qualify me for the New Zealand Founders Society! Young Charles and Sarah left Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England on August 29, 1842.
Ramsbury, Wiltshire
Ramsbury is a village in Wiltshire, the English county where you can find Stonehenge, Avesbury, and the wonderful chalk horses carved into cliffs. Ramsbury has its own website, which I recommend:

Some facts and figures
Charles Stagg was born in 1819 in Ramsbury, a village not far from Marlborough in Wiltshire, England. His father was Thomas Stagg, born in 1795, who married Sarah Phillips in 1812. His grandfather, William Stagg, was born in Milton, Lilbourne, also in Wiltshire, in 1761, and he married Ann Tucker in 1788.
Sarah Lawrence, who married Charles on February 7, 1842, was born in 1820, also in Ramsbury. Her father was George Lawrence. Apparently the surname Lawrence is still a common one in Ramsbury.

Why did they leave England?
This is the question which always interests me about my forebears who came to New Zealand. I believe there was a downturn in sheep farming in Wiltshire during the nineteenth century, so maybe this had something to do with it. And the New Zealand Company was seeking people who'd be willing to emigrate and use their skills in a new country.
But what a courageous thing to do ... to travel halfway around the world, knowing you'd never see your family and friends again.

Maud Stagg
Maud Stagg, my grandmother, was a daughter of William and Christina's.
